Product Overview
The HPS Spartan SP250PR is a 250 VA, single-phase, open-style (core and coil) control transformer that steps down 120/240 VAC to 12/24 VAC. It is designed for general-purpose, light-duty control applications where high inrush or machine-tool duty ratings are not required.
This is a dry-type, open-frame transformer with molded terminal blocks — it mounts inside an electrical enclosure or control panel and is not intended for standalone outdoor use. The windings are vacuum-impregnated with polyester resin and oven-cured for moisture and vibration resistance.
The Spartan series is HPS’s economical control transformer line, positioned below their Imperator (machine-tool duty) series. It is well suited for HVAC controls, signal and alarm systems, motor control circuits, lighting, door bells/chimes, and circuit isolation applications.

What This Transformer is NOT
The Spartan series is a general-purpose / light-duty control transformer. It is not rated for:

Machine tool duty — Applications with high inrush loads (solenoids, contactors with high VA pick-up) should use the HPS Imperator series, which is designed for high-inrush, momentary-duty applications
Outdoor use — This is an open-frame unit with no enclosure. It must be installed inside a NEMA-rated cabinet or panel
High-inrush applications — If your load has a high starting (sealed) VA compared to the holding (unsealed) VA, you need a machine-tool rated transformer with better regulation

For HVAC, signal, alarm, and similar steady-state control loads, the Spartan is the right choice and the more economical option.
