Product Overview
The Eaton Crouse-Hinds ENP5151 is an explosionproof plug rated for use in Class I, Class II, and Class III hazardous (classified) locations. It is part of the Ark-Gard ENP/ENR system — a pin-and-sleeve plug and receptacle design that confines any electrical arc within a factory-sealed chamber when making or breaking a circuit, making it safe to connect and disconnect portable electrical equipment in areas where flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dusts may be present.
This is the plug half of the system. It mates with Ark-Gard ENR receptacles. The ENP5151 is rated 15A at 125 VAC with a standard NEMA 5-15P blade configuration, meaning it can also be used in non-hazardous areas with any standard U-ground NEMA 5-15R wall receptacle — eliminating the need for separate plugs on portable equipment that moves between classified and non-classified areas.

What This Means in Practice

Class I (flammable gases/vapors): Approved for atmospheres containing hydrogen (Group B), ethylene (Group C), and acetone/gasoline/propane-type gases (Group D) — covers the vast majority of petrochemical, refinery, oil & gas, and chemical plant environments.
Class II (combustible dusts): Approved for carbonaceous dusts like coal and coke (Group F) and grain/flour/plastic/wood dusts (Group G).
Class III (fibers/flyings): Approved for textile mills, woodworking, and similar environments with ignitable fibers.

Construction & Materials

Key Design Features

Copper-free aluminum construction — Required in many Class I/II environments to prevent incendive sparking from aluminum-copper alloy friction
Captive set screw design — Standard on all current ENP plugs, prevents loss of critical hardware during field assembly
Single-piece insulator and contact assembly — Simplifies installation and reduces component count
Internal cord strain relief — Built into the handle body, provides mechanical protection for the cord connection
Cable sealing grommet — Neoprene grommet accepts a range of cord diameters for a watertight seal
Field-assemblable with standard tools — No special tooling required

Mating Receptacle
This plug is designed to mate with Eaton Crouse-Hinds Ark-Gard ENR series receptacles. The ENR receptacle incorporates three spring-loaded slide keys that reject standard NEMA configuration plugs — only the ENP plug can complete the connection. This prevents someone from accidentally inserting a non-explosionproof plug into a hazardous-area receptacle.
How the connection works: The ENP plug is fully inserted into the ENR receptacle, then pushed forward to engage the faceplate, and rotated to close the circuit. Once rotation begins, the plug locks into the receptacle and cannot be accidentally disengaged. Any arc generated during make/break is confined within the factory-sealed chamber inside the receptacle.
Reverse compatibility: The ENP plug can be used in standard (non-hazardous) NEMA 5-15R receptacles. However, the ENR receptacle will not accept standard NEMA 5-15P plugs.

Typical Applications

Portable welders, motor-generator sets, compressors, and pumps in classified areas
Temporary lighting systems during plant maintenance and turnarounds
Portable heating/cooling equipment in hazardous locations
Conveyor and material handling equipment in grain elevators, flour mills, and chemical plants
Any portable electrical equipment rated up to 15A / 125V requiring connection in a Class I, II, or III hazardous location
